The Southside Region, including the counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex, and the cities of Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg, is home to hospitals, health systems, Community Health Centers (CHC), community colleges and universities that offer health professions career studies, internships, training and job opportunities.

Ann Switzer, MSN, RN, Director

Ann Switzer, MSN, RN

Ann Switzer, MSN, RN, is Associate Director of the Center of Nursing Excellence (CNE) at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) in South Boston, VA.  She oversees and manages operations of a state-of-the-art nursing and healthcare learning resource center with classroom, skills training, and high-fidelity healthcare simulation facilities and support services. She is responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with higher education partners to support healthcare provider education at all levels, from nurse aide through advanced nursing degrees, as well as continuing education for practicing healthcare professionals. Ms. Switzer manages the CNE staff including adjunct faculty, while dually serving as SVHEC AHEC Director.

Ann’s background includes a BS in Commerce from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia,  in addition to her nursing degree from Southern College of Seventh Day Adventists, and the Master of Science in Nursing, with a focus on Nursing Education, from Liberty University. Ms. Switzer currently serves as a board member of the Virginia State Simulation Alliance. She is also a member of the Virginia Nurses Association (VNA), an affiliate of the American Nurses Association ANA), and served on  the VNA Continuing Education Committee as a reviewer of American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) credit hour applications from 2012 - 2015. She is also active in the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation; the National and Virginia Leagues for Nursing; the Averett University Department of Nurse Education Advisory Council; the Southside Virginia Community College Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse Advisory Councils; and the Virginia Community Health Worker (CHW) Advisory Group.

Visit the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History; go camping, fishing, boating and hiking at Occoneechee State Park; take a tour of the historic Staunton River Battlefield State Park bordering Charlotte and Halifax counties; or visit the South Boston Speedway to watch NASCAR drivers train and race around a short track.
