Health Care Workforce in the Southside Region
The Southside Virginia AHEC (SVAHEC) serves 15 counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex, and the cities of Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg.
The SVAHEC partners with several academic institutions such as Southern Virginia Community College, Danville Community College, Old Dominion University, and Longwood University. In addition, the SVAHEC collaborates with local schools and community health agencies such as Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital to support diverse health-related events.
Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (AHEC)
The Southside Area Health Education Center is hosted by the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) in junction with the Center of Nursing Excellence located in South Boston, Virginia.
Health Careers: The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center works to expand the health care workforce through resume building, job placement, and the promotion of health careers such as nursing, medication/nurse aides, phlebotomy, and more. The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center offers interactive health care skills experiences via Center of Nursing Excellence tours, participation in health, career, and college fairs for high school and other pre-college level students
Health Professions Students: The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center conducts over 200 hours annually in clinical simulations for health professions students using a variety of real world scenarios, such as labor and delivery, emergency response, and mental health. The SVHEC also hosts resourceful events to expose students to trending health concerns and diverse community populations to foster future engagement and networking within the Southside Virginia Region
Health Professionals: Southern Virginia Higher Education Center teaches American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care for professionals, students, and community members to earn certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). In addition, disseminates information on health care issues and participates in community-based research
Communities: The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center responds to local health needs such as disasters, hunger, and health awareness and also participates in interprofessional relationships to tackle current and emerging health issues such as cardiovascular health and substance abuse.

Natasha Lipscomb holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences, with a major in Health Care Administration and a double minor in Human Services and Management from Old Dominion University. Prior to accepting the role as the Southside Virginia Area Health Education Center Director located at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston, Virginia Natasha served as the SVHEC's Fiscal Technician since August 2018. Natasha is passionate about making an impact on her community and educating her community about the many facets of health care careers and ultimately the improvement of quality of life.
