Our Direct Support Professional (DSP) Training Course is a comprehensive, practical, and person-centered course designed to prepare individuals to support people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in meaningful, impactful ways. Grounded in Virginia standards and national best practices, this training equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to provide high-quality, compassionate care in home and community settings:

This 8-module course provides a well-rounded foundation in the essential areas of DSP work, including:

  • Person-Centered Support & Empowerment
    Learn how to support individuals in living self-directed lives by honoring their goals, preferences, and dignity—including the important concept of “dignity of risk.”
  • Understanding Developmental Disabilities
    Gain a strong understanding of developmental and intellectual disabilities, including causes, characteristics, and how to challenge common misconceptions.
  • Communication, Advocacy & Professionalism
    Build skills in effective communication, ethical decision-making, and advocating for the rights, independence, and well-being of those you support.
  • Health, Safety & Daily Care
    Develop critical skills in recognizing and responding to health risks, preventing choking and falls, supporting nutrition, and ensuring safe environments.
  • Community Integration & Meaningful Living
    Learn how to support individuals in building relationships, participating in their communities, and accessing employment and social opportunities.
  • Medicaid Waivers & Service Coordination
    Understand how Virginia’s waiver system works and how DSPs contribute to service planning, documentation, and quality care delivery.

VHWDA's DSP training course costs $100.  

Please review our sales policy before making a purchase. The cost includes:

  • Unlimited access to all didactic course material through the entirety of the course.
  • 1-on-1 technical assistance

 

Registration & Enrollment 

The DSP training course enrolls twice per month in 12-week cohorts.  The dates below are the current available cohorts to choose from:

  • May 28, 2026 – August 28, 2026
  • June 8, 2026 – September 8, 2026
  • June 22, 2026 – September 22, 2026

Step 1: Review VHWDA's Sales Policy

Step 2: Submit your payment:

Step 3: Receive the payment confirmation email, which will include the registration form.  Here, you can select the cohort dates you want to enroll in.

Step 4: Check your email! Once the registration form is submitted, you will be contacted by a VHWDA team member who will confirm your enrollment and provide information about orientation.
