VHWDA invites institutions to apply for supplemental payments for new medical residencies beginning in the state fiscal year (FY) 2026. Supplemental payments for each qualifying residency slot will be $100,000 annually for up to four (4) years. Payments will be made quarterly. A majority of the slots funded shall be in primary care specialties. Preference will be given to residencies located in underserved areas of the Commonwealth that serve Medicaid beneficiaries.

Supplemental GME payments for new primary care and high-need specialty residency slots are contingent on funding. Programs should be aware that the state budget is approved annually.

Institutions should complete and submit an application for each desired residency slot. This requirement stands regardless of the specialty mix of requested slots. For example, if an institution requests one general pediatrician slot, one family practice slot, and a general surgery slot, it should complete 3 separate applications. Additional instructions and information are provided in the application.
